You’re a job creator.
That makes you a hero in my book.
While everybody else is standing around waiting on a paycheck…
You’re the one figuring out how to make payroll. That’s what heroes do.
You didn’t get into this business to become a full-time babysitter, recruiter, and chief fire-putter-outer.
You got into it to build something that matters…a business.
One that provides for your family.
One that creates jobs.
And it ain’t easy…so that’s another reason you are a hero. But let me shoot straight here…
The Problem Ain’t “Bad Help”… It’s a Broken Process
Most landscapers I talk to say the same thing:
“Tony… I just need better people.”
No sir… that ain’t it.
What you need… is a better system.
Because here’s what I see over and over:
- Trying to recruit, interview, hire, and train… all in one big messy step
- Running ads, chasing folks, wasting hours on interviews
- Getting ghosted… or worse… hiring the wrong person out of desperation
That’s like trying to mow, edge, blow, fertilize, and landscape a property…
all in one pass.
Ain’t gonna work.
Step One: Turn That Truck Into a Magnet
Before you can get good at interviewing…
You’ve gotta get more of the right people showing up in the first place.
And guess what?
You’re already driving the solution around town every single day.
Your truck.
Right now it’s hauling mowers and blowers or spreaders and sprayers…
But it ought to be out there building your team.
Recruiting Is Marketing—Plain and Simple
Y’all listen close…
Recruiting is nothing more than marketing for employees.
And just like you wouldn’t send the same sales message to every customer…
You better not send the same hiring message to every job seeker.
Different folks… need different invitations.
- Young and hungry? Talk about opportunity
- Experienced? Talk about leadership and growth
- Entry-level? Talk about training and stability
When you speak clearly… the right ones lean in.
And the wrong ones?
They move on.
That’s a win. No wasted time with the wrong guy or gal!
The Real Goal: Attract & Repel
Now here’s where most folks mess this thing up…
They try to attract everybody.
Big mistake.
You don’t need more people…
You need the right people.
A good recruiting system does two things:
- Attracts folks who fit your company, job and culture
- Repels folks who don’t belong
And the faster you repel the wrong ones…
The less time you waste. Get it?
Confidence Comes From Repetition
Now let’s talk about the next step—screening.
You can’t get good at interviewing…
If you ain’t got a steady flow of candidates.
And you won’t have a steady flow…
If your recruiting system is weak.
See how this works?
One step feeds the next.
When your truck starts bringing in consistent prospects…
You gain confidence.
You follow your process.
Day after day.
No guessing. No hoping. No chasing.
Just working the system.
Automation Is Your Silent Partner
Now here’s where today’s technology changes the game…
Your truck message → sends them to your page
Your page → shows your video
Your video → explains your expectations
Your system → schedules the next step
All without you lifting a finger.
While you’re out cutting grass or at your kid’s ballgame…
Your system is out recruiting.
While you’re at home eating supper…
Your system is filtering applicants.
That’s what I call working smarter, not harder.
Stop Trying to Do It All at Once
Let me give it to you plain:
You don’t fix hiring overnight.
You fix it one step at a time.
- Build a system that attracts the right candidates
- Then build a process to screen them
- Then train and develop the best ones
But if step one is broken…
Everything else falls apart.
Some of you may think this whole idea is a bunch of crap…it ain’t.
I’ve been using this approach – advertise – present – screen – 10 minute interview – screen again – hire slow since 2017.
I don’t try to do it all in one pass.
I hire youth – those kids in school with a system like this. Click and watch the video.
I hire adults – those who are looking for work like this. Click and watch the video..
Follow the links and I’ll show you what I mean…this ain’t a joke. It’s a system that very few landscapers use…except a few dozen that I have taught – step-by-step exactly what to do.
I hope you’ll follow me and see for yourself…it works!
A Little Truth in a Little Rhythm
When you rush the hire… you’ll feel the fire…
When you build it right… your future gets bright…
When systems lead the way… you win more every day.
Consider This…
You’re not just running a lawn business.
You’re building a machine…
A machine that creates jobs, supports families, and keeps this country moving—whether Fedzilla wants to admit it or not…you’re building a nation every time you create a job!
So don’t you dare apologize for hiring someone who needs a shot.
Give ‘em a job.
Give ‘em direction.
Give ‘em a chance to grow.
But for heaven’s sake…
Build a system that makes it all work, for you.
And it starts…
Right there on the side of your truck.
